CD Reviews

Following the Blue Yodeler's Lead.
Kevin Fontenot | New Orleans, LA United States | 08/12/2005
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Back in the 70s there was a series of LPs titled "Sounds Like Jimmie Rodgers" that collected the recordings of various artists singing songs in the Rodgers' style--usually forms of the blue yodel. This box revives that practice with a cross section of artists who followed Rodgers' lead. There is a whole disc devoted to the early recordings of Gene Autry which will shock those only used to the cowboy material, and a good portion of one disc given over to Goebel Reeves. The other discs are split between various artists including the excellent Buddy Jones and the Hispanic duo Val & Pete (which just goes to show how far Rodgers' influence extended). Riley Puckett (who recorded yodels before Rodgers) is here as are Stuart Hamblen, Bill Cox, and the great Ernest Tubb. Some important Rodgers' followers aren't here, like Jimmie Davis, who was the first to cover Rodgers with his version of "Away Out on the Mountain." The master himself is represented on 4 sides, two overdubs done in the 1950s with a Chet Atkins led band comprised of fantastic studio musicians and the two British "Jimmie Rodgers' Medley" sides. It is nice to see the range of artists here who were influenced by Rodgers, but 100 cuts of blue yodels might tire the average listener. But this is a great box that reveals the power of a single artist and how influence spread via the recordings. "Sounds Like Jimmie Rodgers" belongs in very country fan's collection."
