Not Bad At All

(4 out of 5 stars)

"I had heard Outlander's "The Vamp" before, and couldn't find it anywhere else, so I found it buried in the "Various Artists" section of the Techno shelf and bought it. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the disc. Sure, it all sounds dated (what do you expect by a CD subtitled "Classic to the Core"???) but there are some truly good songs that aren't cheesy and outdated. Joey Beltram's "Energy Flash" is a great song, subtle yet intense at the same time. "The Vamp" is very catchy in the way it builds, and "Roll It Up/Let's Do It" is just great in its raw energy. But the two highlights of the disc are Genaside II's "Narra Mine" (far, far better than the Armand Van Helden mix) and 4 Hero's "Mr. Kirk's Nightmare." They are two of the darkest dance tracks I've ever heard (outside of the freakish gabber stuff - stay far away) but at the same time are just a lot of fun to listen to. It's worth the price of the CD for these two alone. The rest of it is pretty much mediocre (excepting Manix's pleasant "Feel Real Good") but who cares? With 3 genuine home runs ("Energy Flash", "Narra Mine", and "Mr. Kirk's Nightmare") that are pretty difficult to find now, this CD's a good pick if you're open to older techno."
