CD Reviews
A bargain for fans of Spector's music.

"This CD might be called "The Best of 'Back to Mono.'"
Twelve of my thirteen favorite non-Christmas songs on the "Mono" boxed set are on this CD. (One that isn't, unfortunately, is "This Could Be the Night," performed by the Modern Folk Quartet.)
If the uncertain economic climate makes you think twice about the "Mono" set, this CD is an excellent alternative. It contains the cream of Spector's output.
P. S. to Amazon: It's "Philles," not "Phillies." It's a record company, not a baseball team.

"This is the best straight-up Phil Spector collection of the hits available. The sound quality is good, and all the important radio hits are here."
You can't judge a CD by its cover

"What me skeptical at first about whether I was getting the real McCoy or not was the list of song titles on the outside jacket cover. With the exception of tracks 20-22 they didn't match up at all with the titles on the inside cover slip. One song title even had a grammatical error. Track 12 on the outside cover read 'Not Too Young to Get Marries,' but this should have read 'Not Too Young to Get Married(T11). Fortunately, the artists were the real thing. Phil Spector's 'Spanish Harlem' was exceptional. His rendering of the lyrics still has the charm to soothe the wildest heart. Moreover, it has been decades since I've heard the Ronettes and Crystals and how I've missed not only their crescendos but how well they could articulate the melodies and harmonies. How could you not fall in love again after hearing 'Then he Kissed me' by the Crystals, and the uplifting 'Be my Baby' by the Ronettes
All in all. I was quite impressed with both the artists and the title selections."
A great Phil Spector Hits Compiliation CD

"I have the Mono Box Set. This CD, is fantastic. The Mono Box is muddy sounding. It lacks detail and dynamics.
This one CD is excellent. Abkco did a great job of remastering this CD. It allows the listener to hear more detail. Withh Spector's Wall of Sound- you can hear the aspects of the music that really is what music is all about. The rhythmn section: drums, percussions, and a great bass that does not muddy the mix. The great lead vocals, the back up singers (I can clearly here things in this CD that I could never hear before) The crispness of the total sound- when heard for the first time, even if you are a fan of Spector's music, Even after one spin I wanted to listen to it again from beginning to end. Of course, on one CD, it contains most of the hits, but that is what a "Best of Compiliation" is supposed to do.
Another thing that is rare with Compiliations is the Volume tends to variate (sp) or be inconsistent from song to song- This one is very much the same level and this is important to me
Also, the songs are in MONO as originally intended. I am a Stereo person and I also picked up the Ronettes (best of) which is in great stereo. But, in seeing other reviews of the other Spector CD's (The Crystals- mostly noted) is not in stereo and has the bass more prominate in one speaker among othr problems.
So, if you are looking for a nice best of CD (yes not much rare stuff here) you cannot go wrong with this CD. There were a couple of cuts that I was not familiar with that were also great and that was a nice bonus.
Also, of note- It is hard to find CD's like this- except on web sites such as Amazon. The price is good, and the Sound is Fantastic. I really recommend this CD to anyone who really enjoys great sounding music at a decent price. I found the seller also excellent. My CD was shipped very quickly and arrived as it was advertized.
I am a Spector fan of his timeless girl groups that really define a time for when they came out and not only has maintained its time but, in my opinion, it has aged very nicely for me over the years. And that is icing on the cake
I hope that this is helpful--after all music is about what you like to hear and how it sounds and this CD does both very nicely for me

The Best Phil Spector So Far
Paul Urbahns | 01/30/2010

"Phil Spector has controlled the reissues of his material since the 1960s. This release was prepared from the original master tapes after Spector went to jail, so he did not control it and the quality is much better than prior releases on ABKCO. Teri Landi and Bob Ludwig have done a masterful job on this release. The bass is full and rich, the instruments have a presence seldom found on mono recordings. The only thing that stopped this from being five stars is the lack of stereo. However the original singles were mono masterpieces of another era.
I have all the others and highly recommend this as a starting point, or for the collector wanting a good basic "hits" set to pop into the player."
