She's Dead...
Joe Hiles | 06/11/1999
(4 out of 5 stars)

"If you're looking of the original riot grrl head straight for this compilation and The Eyes. Screaming "She's Dead" and thumping her bass (clad in a baby doll, torn fishnets and stilleto's) while singing about Quaaludes is Charlotte Caffey of Go-Go's fame. Caffey and her band The Eyes (drummer DJ Bonebrake left the band after this show to join X and Caffey departed for the Go-Go's) had incredible fun with punk. Imagine Hole meets the Barenaked Ladies and you'll come close. This is what LA punk is all about."
The Eyes and The Dickies are great!!!

(4 out of 5 stars)

"I love The Eyes (not to be confused with the 60s band) but its impossible to find anything by them. I've heard the TAQN 7" and a couple others from illegally downloading off the internets. Amazing poppy punk with funny lyrics. This is the only Eyes I could find on Amazon. The live recordings are great. The sound quality is amazing considering this was recorded in the 70s at a punk club. No keyboards like on the studio tracks. If you like the Dickies, Ramones, early X, early Circle Jerks, etc you'll like. Good time upbeat punk. Ofcourse, you've probably heard the Dickies! The live recordings on here are, like The Eyes, a contrast to their polished studio sound but, also like Eyes, sounds more raw and gives the energy of live punk that cannot be found in any other genre. I'd only heard the Randoms' infamous kbd punk classic "Let's Get Rid Of Yew York" which is on here live. The other songs are pretty good but not great. Black Randy was kind of a joke. Hadn't heard but had heard of. Not very good, was probably fun to be there or something. Maybe. This would get a 5 if it weren't for Black Randy. Anyway, The Eyes and Dickies are great. Reminds me of how I first got into punk before all the anger and politics; energy and fun! I don't know a whole lot about the Masque, it was before my time and I live in the midwest but I love X, the Germs, Dickies, Dead Beats, Zeros, Eyes, and The Controllers and they were all regulars plus others. Old-school punk is great and this is more light hearted, fun side of it. This is also before it was co-opted by the mainstream. I recomend to fans of '75-77 american punk. I highly recomend fans of the Dickies to get this for the Eyes tracks, too. "Disneyland makes me communist, makes me plant the bombs in the trashcan lids!" Drugs, fun, and power chords."
