Synopsis

Jesus has been many things to many people: Son of God, carpenter, Rock of Ages, and social radical. But now inspiration for an "Epic Mini-Series" and adult-contemporary-oriented soundtrack album? Irony be damned: in the golden age of marketing, it only makes sense to wrap the gospel in slick, radio-friendly pop. Skeptics may balk at its blatant misappropriation of 1970s chestnuts like one-hit wonder Norman Greenbaum's "Spirit in the Sky" (its Zen overtones rewritten for dogmatic correctness by DC Talk) and Earth Wind & Fire's "Shining Star" (strangely recast here as minor-key hip-hop dirge by Yolanda Adams), but strong efforts by LeAnn Rimes and Steven Curtis Chapman will please the faithful. Compared with Patrick Williams's brooding score (available in its entirety as a separate release), the efforts of 98 Degrees and Hootie and the Blowfish almost seem to walk on water--which is a nice way to say they're lighter than air. The major sin the Jesus soundtrack seems guilty of is preaching to the converted; the music and message are full of reassurance and hope, but they're often as personally challenging as an Up with People road show. --Jerry McCulley

Uplifting!

"Whatever your taste in music, (Christian - my personal favorite! , R&B,pop, even country)this CD has it all. It's especially nice to hear secular artists on this album. Ironically enough, one of the best songs, "Jesus Loves Me", is done by Edwin McCain, not necessarily known in the Christian arena. Being a Steven Curtis Chapman and Avalon fan, their songs once again didn't disappoint, but then again, neither did the others. In response to a previous review by a music lover in Maryland, part of the CD's title is "...music INSPIRED by". Each artist was asked to contribute a song either inspired by the thoughts about who they thought Jesus to be, or simply what Jesus means to them. There's certainly nothing wrong with 98 Degrees or Hootie and the Blowfish singing about Jesus - in fact, I'm sure He's delighted that they are! And more should! Music used to glorify God in any form should be appreciated."
Very beautiful!

"I didn't even plan to buy that CD. It happenned by surprise. I went into this christian bookstore and a song from the soundtrack was playing (it was the track of Leann Rimes) I immediately ask where I could find the song and of course they told me it was from this compilation. I listen to the whole CD and I thought it was very refreshing. The songs are very beautiful and touching. I love the work of Steven Curtis Chapman, Avalon, Jaci Valesquez,98degrees,I could go on and on..."
