"The Invictus Soul Box Set is the best compilation I own (and I have over 3200 CDs and more MP3s). There is not a single weak track. While the Motown sound is still strong, new 1970's styles have been grafted on. This unique sound is somewhere between the driving I'll Be There (Four Tops) and The Payback (James Brown). Every song features an excellent rhythm section (probably borrowed from Berry Gordy), interesting lyrics and dynamic performance.
This set prompted me to get Chairmen of the Board Finder's Keeper Invictus Anthology, Holland Dozier Holland Why Can't We Be Lovers Invictus Sessions, Freda Payne Unhooked Generation Complete Invictus Sessions and The Politicians' Psycha Soul Funkadelic CDs.
Get it while you can. This one's a keeper!

"Lot of late 60' early 70's soul sounds on this three disc gem. Look at the price. Enticing isn't it ? Great stuff at a great bargain. Mixture of what soul was like at that time , a little Motown a little Stax , and a whole lot of talent !"

"Being born and raised in Detroit and had so much access to great music this collection was long overdue. Holland/Dozier/Holland had a dispute with Berry Gordy and left to form the Invictus label and put out quite a few Detroit radio classics and great album tracks from Frida Payne, The Chairman of the Board featuring General Johnson who had a hit in the 60's with the Shoman called "It Will Stand", Honey Cone, Laura Lee and many more. Side One is filled with chart hits, Side 2 and 3 with hidden gems that if you're from the Motor City you'll just love. Reminds me of great soul stations like WCHB, WJLB, and WGPR. Detroiters go for it!!"
