Synopsis

Album Description
Second installment in this delightful series of Northern Soul compilations The Northern Soul phenomenon was one of the biggest musical movements of the '70s in the UK. At its height, thousands of party people would descend on the clubs and venues of the scene every weekend for all-night parties, driven by high octane Soul music from the previous decade up to the present day. The four volumes of this series trace the history of the scene via four of the greatest clubs on the circuit, and in the course of this, they present the most definitive, best researched and most authoritatively annotated survey of Northern Soul ever released on CD in the UK. Features 25 tracks from the likes of Major Lance, Little Richard, The Triumphs, Roy Hamilton and many others. Sony/BMG. 2007.

MORE GREAT NORTHERN SOUL
Stuart Jefferson | San Diego,Ca | 08/21/2009
(4 out of 5 stars)

"One disc 64 minutes approximately. The sound of scratchy,"hissy" 45's has been cleaned up,and is now clean and fairly crisp. Some of the original warmth of vinyl still can be heard throughout this collection, which is an added bonus.

This is Vol. 2 of a four volume set showcasing Northern Soul in four different clubs/areas. This volume showcases The Golden Torch in the area known as Stoke-On-Trent in England,in the early/mid-seventies. This time period was the real era of Northern Soul. All over England people got together to dance or listen to their favorite singers,or discover new ones. The trading, buying and selling of 45's was fast and furious. The artists ranged from well known singers to others who never made much,if any, impression beyond a small area. What separates N.S. from the rest of r&b/soul music is that the majority of tracks were up-tempo. This kept the dancers on the floor, sometimes all night, dancing to some of the best known and unknown soul music ever recorded.

This collection gives a good overview of the genre, not only in this specific area, but all over England, wherever people got together to dance and listen to some great soul music. Some of the more well known artists include THE OVATIONS,LITTLE RICHARD,and JOHNNY MOORE. Alongside these artists were groups/singers like THE VIRGINIA WOLVES,BOBBI LYNN,THE CAVALIERS,and many more. One thing about N.S. was that the music was uniformly fine-no matter who the artist was. For anyone who likes soul from this era, especially up-beat,in your face vocals with a good back-beat,this is for you.

The booklet is informative, with a short overview of the era and this particular club by Ian Dewhirst,an authority on N.S. There's track-by-track info which helps give even more insight into this movement. Also included are photos of pertinent 45 labels,a few of the artists, and reproductions of ads for all night events. All in all,a nice presentation. Do yourself a favor and pick this up before it disappears."
