CD Reviews

Great smooth album
Cristian Amargós | Barcelona, Spain | 04/10/2005
(4 out of 5 stars)

"This is an album full of songs about loss. but the album is never sad, instead, the songs are written in a positive way about getting through the loss about someone you care. Most vocals are accompanied only by an accoustic guitar, which gives you a very intimate feel.

In between songs, there are spoken passages read by Adam Arkin, with cites of some great writers or philosophers, with new age music on the background.

The songs are great. The opener, Some Flowers, sung by Marcella Detroit is one of the best tracks here. Marcy, as usual, brings the best of her multi-octave voice in this stripped down, folky tune. She was the only artist I knew from this compilation, and she doesn't disappoint.

But there are other beautiful tunes here. The cover of eric clapton, tears in heaven, sung by tuck & patti, is absolutely gorgeous, a real tearjerker. So is track #4, band of angels, sung by deep-voiced john speigler and written by Joan Abrahamson, a mother who lost her child. The almost acappella song, by and by, sung by maxayn lewis, is very uplifting.

The compilation ends with 2 versions of the traditional amazing grace, one by Harry Dean Stanton (the actor?) and another by ester austin. I prefer the latter, which is very gospel-like.

Overall, this is a quiet folk-blues album, perfect for relaxing and meditating. Also, if you've suffered the loss of someone you love, buy this album because it really can help. The songs are very uplifting and optimistic. As it is said in the booklet, "music can help at a level that nothing else can reach""
