Hallowed Be Thy Halloween, Part 1.
4-Legged Defender | ATL. GA. | 12/30/2009
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Next to Xmas as a kid, Halloween was and still is my favorite 'holiday' - these days, I scour the satellite channels for classic Horror flix to kick back and enjoy, reliving the days before I had responsibilities and 'grown-up' concerns. I also love to listen to songs about Monsters and Things That Go Bump in the Night, and have picked up a bunch of such cd`s, and this is one of the better ones. THE SHADOWS OF KNIGHT and NAZZ open the disc with impressive tracks that you`d never think came from 60`s bands, they sound so contemporary. "Boppin' at the Black Lagoon" is a killer, both musically and lyrically, same goes for "Baby Godzilla" by Nazz, and has wicked guitar bits flying throughout. "Only the Dead Know Brooklyn" by the SHIRTS kinda sounds like SQUEEZE meets MARTIN CRENSHAW, a good little pop tune that sticks in your skull. PAT HORGAN and THUNDER ROAD do a nasty little number called "You`re A Creep" that cranks up and rocks hard. "Sometimes I`m a Zombie" by PAX ROMANA is another good pop tune w/ cool sustained guitar sounds. HARLEY FINE does a blistering, boisterous "Welcome To The Midnight Hour" that has nothing to with WILSON PICKETT. These are my favorites trax, you may think differently. I`m disappointed w/ VINCE MARTELL`S (VANILLA FUDGE) take on DONOVAN`S classic "Season of the Witch" - it`s sleepy, melodramatic and contrived until he solos on guitar. (DONOVAN won`t be losing any sleep over this remake). But the axe solos ARE worth sitting through for sure. His contribution to the second volume is magnificent, however, so get both volumes and stop screwing around if you`re still reading... I`ve got nothing good to say about the inclusion of the PEG PEARL trax, so I`ll shut up now."
