Synopsis

Product Description
Not all soldiers are equal. For the most part they are unwelcome. But there were always those who were welcome, for instance to free a country and its people from the reign of megalomaniac criminals. There were connections between these young men and parts of the female population, and the songs on this 26 track collection helped them forget the workaday world. Songs like Dankeschn, Bitteschn, Wiedersehen, Lili Marleen, Fraulein, Lonely River Rhine and others have become evergreens since - here they are presented for the first time as a whole. Features Hank Snow, Hank Locklin, Marty Robbins, Ernest Tubb, Slim Whitman, Bobby Helms, Eddie Wilson, George Morgan, Montana Slim, Lawton Williams, Webb Pierce and others. CD with 40-page booklet.

(5 out of 5 stars)

""Foreign Love Affair" is one of Bear Family's best themed style discs--the common thread here being relationships between US soldiers and foreign sweethearts. Most date from the Cold War era including the classic "Fraulein." Others are fairly obscure, but there are some nice love songs here. It would have been nice to include Buck Owens' "Made In Japan." Jimmie Skinner's "I Found My Girl in the USA"--just to show that American girls are still the best--also should be here. A nice themed disc and it would be good to use in classes that deal with the social side of the late 20th century."
