Synopsis

Album Description
Three years in the making, THE FIRE THIS TIME utilises music, samples and narration to deconstruct the Gulf war, reveal mass media propaganda, and illustrate the devastating effect of sanctions on the civilian population of Iraq. Exclusive music and mixes are provided by the cream of UK electronica, including ORBITAL and APHEX TWIN. Widely acclaimed in the UK since its release in October 2002, the album has garnered praise from mainstream and marginal press alike, including a WIRE MAGAZINE top 50 placing. RED PEPPER described it as "...compelling, extraordinary and overwhelming...", THE BIG ISSUE called it "...a masterpiece..." UNCUT MAGAZINE wrote of it as "...a shattering protest record..." whilst Q MAGAZINE felt it was "....emotional, shocking and eye opening...." It has also received accolades from Noam Chomsky, Ed Herman and Howard Zinn, amongst others.

CD Reviews

A gem

"I've seen some war-supporters (of OIF) become almost offended at the presented material. It may be hard to listen to the narratives, that are sometime very bold and hard to accept without hearing any cited sources. You can do some research (I had to, some things were almost too hard to believe) of the history, propoganda, and misinformation presented about the first gulf war presented on this CD. The presentation here, combines with some really good electonic music that does not detract from the narration at all and works out very well. The remix of Aphex Twin's Come To Daddy, for example, will pause and suspend while details of combat in the war are described, but the furious drums and demonic screaming will follow the end of a phrase. The narration mostly covers the recent history of Iraq before the Gulf War, the war itself, and the following econimic warfare, but does not cover the build-up of OIF. Though this CD will tell mostly one side of the story and (in my opinion) is not too critical of Saddam's rule, there isn't much distortion of the truth here. Much of the narration actually comes from quotes, many of them direct audio clips of official speeches. The narrative CD can only hold so much information however, and though it covers only a small portion of history in the middle east, it is put together very well.
I don't care too much for the 2nd CD, which is the same, but without the narration. All the music on here was done by some great bands, but the remixes fit better with the narration."

"Lesley Stahl on U.S. sanctions against Iraq: "We have heard that a half million children have died. I mean, that's more children than died in Hiroshima. And, you know, is the price worth it?"

Secretary of State Madeleine Albright: "I think this is a very hard choice, but the price--we think the price is worth it.""
