Great But Marred By The Same Problems as in the Tour

""Family Values" is now in its third outing. The Fall 2001 tour headlined Stone Temple Pilots, Staind and Linkin Park. This album is a good sample of the tour, with the same flaws. The album starts of with a blistering STP "Vasoline" (the first live track on CD of STP, aren't they overdue for a live album?), followed by Likin Park's equally scortching "Runaway", and then Staind's best track ever "Fade". There are many other choice cuts on this album, including Static-X's "Cold", STP's "Wicked Garden" (with some nice banter by Scott Weiland about being born in San Jose, where this track was recorded) and the album closer by Linkin Park's "One Step Closer", just terrific, the energy jumps out at you!The major flaw in this album is to include 2 of STP's "unplugged" tracks, the truly dreadful "Wonderful" and "Creep", which of course is a classic, but... as in the concert, they are out of place, and bring down the energy completely. What were they thinking? So no 5 stars..."
Flawless Performances; Aaron Lewis Most "Value"-able Player

"Flawless performances here. Staind sound so good live you almost forget how boring they are to watch. Deadsy successfully update Rush's "Tom Sawyer" as Gothic synth-metal, a bold statement because I can't stand Rush. STP proves why they're still around with spot-on performances of classics "Vaseline" and "Wicket Garden". And Aaron Lewis is all over the place, dropping surprisingly cool guest appearances with both Linkin Park ("One Step Closer", also featuring a young lovely named Michelle) and STP (a stunning version of "Creep"), and taking the stage for a stirring solo acoustic cover of Pearl Jam's "Black" that would bring tears to the eyes of Eddie Vedder himself. And overall some of the best recording I've ever heard on a live album. It's really good stuff, whether you saw the show or not."
Why I should have gone to the Family Values Tour 2001...

"Do you have the Family Values Tour 2001 CD? You should. This CD adds to the list of reasons why live tour CD's, if done right, are incredibly awesome. The Ozzfest 2001 CD lies at the top of that list, but Family Values lies just beneath that. I've never been a huge fan of the tour (mainly because Limp Bizkit and rap artists like Ice Cube have been on the tour), but last year's tour makes me a believer. After listening to this CD, I am extremely disappointed that I didn't see this tour live. However, luckily, this CD helps recreate the experience that I missed. As said before, this CD is what makes live music rock. Whether it's the crushing riffs of Linkin' Park's "Runaway" and "One Step Closer", the haunting lyrics of Staind's "Fade", "It's Been Awhile", and Aaron Lewis' "Black", or the incredible sound of Static-X's "Push It" and "Cold", the Family Values Tour 2001 CD delivers from all fronts.Personal favorites include both outings from Static-X (especially "Push It" featuring Exeter Blue from Deadsy), "Vasoline" by STP, "Fade" by Staind, Aaron Lewis' acoustic Pearl Jam cover of "Black", and my all-time favorite on this album, "One Step Closer" by Linkin' Park, featuring Aaron Lewis from Staind. I'm sure all of you have heard "One Step Closer" about sixteen million times on the radio and TV and have told Chester to "shut up" like I have, but there is nothing like this version of the song. Aaron Lewis singing Chester's part in the song ("Everything you say to me... I need a little room to breathe...") is beyond words. My only complaint with it is that Aaron does not appear eariler in the song (he appears after the guitar bridge). Even Deadsy's (whom I've never heard of until now) effort on the CD is fantastic. This CD is definately worth picking up if you are a fan of Staind, Static-X, Linkin' Park, and like me, were not able to see the tour live last fall. It's no Ozzfest 2001 CD, but it's incredible nonetheless."
It's all good.

"Being a fan of every band on this disc (Even though my interest in Static-X is fading very quickly) I felt the urge to pick this up. I own the other two Family Values albums, and even though it isn't up to the quality and content of the 1998 disc, it sure as heck kills the 1999 disc (Filter have to be the worst live band ever...). Even though it's just a short 12 tracks, it's completely listenable, I didn't find myself skipping a single track. The energetic tracks such as STP's "Vasoline" and "Wicked Garden," Linkin Park's rendition of "One Step Closer" with Aaron Lewis and Static-X teaming up with Elijah Blue (aka P. Exeter Blue) from Deadsy on "Push It" are contrasted by some really great mellow tracks. Most noteable is Aaron Lewis' solo cover of Pearl Jam's "Black" and Chester from Linkin Park combined with STP on "Wonderful." I was kind of disappointed however that there was only one Deadsy track. They need the exposure, so give it to them. They are one of the most promising bands out there, give them the credit they deserve! But still, it's a great CD. If you like the bands on this CD, you will get your money's worth."
