CD Reviews

A Great X Experience
Levi Lange | Loveland, Colorado | 01/08/2000
(4 out of 5 stars)

"All 3 disks are excellent, provides a great mix of Pete Tong with the more house grooves, moves on to the ever strong Fat Boy Slim mix's and then into a deep trance with some of Oakenfolds most popular mixes. I recommend this album to any true Oakenfold or Slim lover...Otherwise, the price may be a bit high for you begginers unless you purchased it in Europe and brought it back as I did...Either way, your call..."
Showcase of electronica

"I was a little reluctant to pick this one up because I don't like Fatboy Norman too much, but I decided to anyway because of my love for Oakenfold and my like toward Pete Tong. Essential Millennium is basically a showcase of three different genres in electronica. Paul Oakenfold mixes some good top 40 trance on his CD, Pete Tong weaves some melodic drum and bass, and Fatboy Slim, well, who knows what he spins. I don't mean that in a bad way, of course, it's just that Fatboy Slim's music has changed a lot recently, and I worry that he is going to sell his funk, techno origins to more top-forty hits like he did on his last album. I don't mind if mixes go top forty, I just hate musicians who sell their musical souls for mainstream sound (Can you say "Moby"?). But Slim's sound on EM is quite original and funk-inspired like his sounds before "Funk's Soul Brother" or "Praise You." Pete Tong's mix is a good chill out Cd for the late night when all is said and done. I really like his sounds, but I haven't purchased too much of his material because most of his stuff doesn't get to us Americans from England, at a reasonable price. Oakenfold spins some quality tracks very well like he does on Cream and GU:NY, but I had heard many of the tracks before like "Jumbo". Nevertheless, it is a good example of the kind of emotional, uplifting trance he spins on other albums. All in all, EM is a good representation of what these pioneers in electronica are about. I gave it four stars because it is not the full story, but it is a good one, nonetheless."
Pete Tong is simply amazing

"If it weren't for Pete Tong, I'd probably feel like I spent too much money on this collection. Thankfully, Tong has put on some of the best music I have heard in years on his disc. Under the Water (1), Rendez Vous (3), Music Sounds Better With You (4), U Don't Know Me (8), and Get Get Down (11) are beats that I just can't get enough of. I was really let down by the Fatboy Slim disc and expected much more from such a talented artist. The Okenfold disc is pretty average but still worth the purchase. All hail Pete Tong!"
