A Disco Lover's Goldmine!

"If you're like me, and try to collect as much classic disco on cd's as you can find then you're in for a real treat with this 2-cd twenty one track compilation called "Disco Discharge: Classic Disco". I may be mistaken but I'd swear this is the first time I've seen Idris Mohammed's "Could Heaven Ever Be Like This", Johnny Mathis's "Gone Gone Gone", The Glitter Band's "Makes You Blind (Re-Edit)" all in their glorious full length versions for the first time on cd. Now this is definately one collection you'll want to snatch up ASAP. Along with the above mentioned disco gems you have other choice cuts such as Double Discovery's "Thanks For Loving Me", Bomber's "(Everybody) Get Dancin'", Cerrone's "Look For Love", The Player Association's "Turn The Music Up", John Davis & The Monster Orchestra's "Love Magic" plus more. Some of the songs appear to have been transferred from vinyl as I can detect a few minor light pops here and there when listening through headphones, but for the most part the sound is excellent. There's also a nice four page booklet which gives information about the various songs as well. And just for the record these songs are all individual tracks and not mixed together. A must have for the disco music afficianado."
Fast and loose with "disco" and "classic"

"Hmmm... . The classic disco era ended at the beginning of 1980. Disco evolved from there into more generic, non-threatening "dance music" or faster, gayer, heavier Hi-Nrg. Much more variety, widening and narrowing occurred after the early 80's. "Funky Town" ushered in 1980 and was either the last "disco" hit or the first "dance" hit. That classic may have been the biggest cusp-rider of all time.

This niggling with details plays into this set's title and track selection. There are some terrific songs here and the music sounds great. There are also some head-scratchers. Many of these tracks have been or are currently available on CD. I'm a big fan of keeping the music alive but a bigger fan of bringing more back on CD, so why include "Got To Be Real," which has been compiled to death, when space could have been provided to one of the many lost songs that deserve a little CD-release love (Baby O's "In The Forest" or Donna Summer's long version of "WIth Your Love," as 2 examples). How is "Thanks For Loving Me," recorded in 1982, and not even released, either disco or a classic? Listening to it here, it's certainly not disco. It's much more a ballad that long overstays its welcome no matter what the liner notes say. Here's a minor mystery: Was "Livin' Up To Love," one of my favorite Boris Midney songs, recorded by Companion, as it's here attributed, or by Double Discovery, as indicated on the original 12" single and previous collections? It still sounds great, but that confusion is puzzling. Either way, it's yet another song here from technically outside the disco era. Details, details.

Despite the niggling, this and the other 3 sets in this series are in my collection. Some reasons to grab this now before it's gone: Esther Phillips, Grey & Hanks, Idris Muhammed, John Davis.

To Demon Music and Harmless, keep them coming. Amazon, thanks for listing the track lengths.

"Whoever A&R's this series, did a great job. Some very obscure tracks on here. Very nice to have them on CD for the First time."
