Synopsis

From the guys (Jack Canfield and Mark Victor Hansen) who brought you the book Chicken Soup for the Soul and its various incarnations (i.e., additional revenue streams), Chicken Soup for Little Christian Souls beatifically packages 14 feel-good songs about God, Jesus, and living the good life. While Wes King's "Joy," divine diva Rebecca St. James's "Jesus Loves the Little Children," and Godspell's "Day by Day" are what you'd expect on such a Christian Souls set, there are also some surprises here. The folk-singing giant Bill Staines opens the disc with his resplendent "A Place in the Choir" while traditional folkies Mike and Peggy Seeger do a simple, unvarnished version of "Who Built the Ark? Noah, Noah" that stands in good contrast to the record's more produced cuts--such as the old Ray Stevens hit "Everything Is Beautiful" and Ocean's gospel pop hit "Put Your Hand in the Hand." The parent might wonder why at least one tune from Jesus Christ Superstar wasn't included, but your kids will still thrill to the rich assortment and voices that color this children's sing-along testament to faith, which is bound to earn Canfield and Hansen even more credit in heaven. --Martin Keller
