(4 out of 5 stars)

"This CD is one of three that are included in the box set, "100 Best Loved Hymns", listed separately on Amazon. It also contains EXACTLY the same 34 tracks that form part of the 4-CD box set, "100 Hymns and Praise Classics" (which is in turn identical to the aforementioned 3-CD set), also listed on Amazon. At the time of this writing, both the 3-CD and the 4-CD sets cost the same as this single CD by itself (or less if you use Amazon Marketplace). If you want this CD, you might as well buy one of the 100-track box sets instead.

Actually, the first 25 of the exact tracks on this CD have also been included (along with 25 other hymns) in at least two other 2-CD box sets also posted on Amazon, including "50 Hymns & Praise Favorites" attributed to the Joslin Grove Choral Society, and "50 Amazing Hymns" attributed to the Great Plains Chorale. (The Joslin Grove and Great Plains releases are identical, notwithstanding the different names given for the performing artists). At the time of this writing, these 2-CD box sets are even LESS expensive than the single CD being advertised in this particular posting. A prospective buyer would be wise to look at those 2-CD (50-track) box sets before buying this single 34-track CD individually.

Regarding the content of this oft-released, multi-titled, multi-attributed CD, the hymns are sung in traditional arrangements, often with a choir accompanied by a piano or organ. Some are by soloists or smaller groups of singers, accompanied by a piano. If you're looking for a solid traditional presentation of these classics, you will probably not be disappointed. I give the music 4 stars rather than 5 because I feel that this choral group's soloists on some tracks -- while good singers -- have voices that are perhaps not sufficiently smooth and mellow to allow them to come across well as soloists on a recording."
