"If you ask me, the artists of the 1970's produced some great pop music. This fine CD gives us eighteen tracks to help us remember the good old days; and younger people may very well be turned onto this music when hearing this CD.
The album hardly has a dud in the bunch. Barry White's "Can't Get Enough Of Your Love, Babe" has great percussion, sound effects and strings to bolster Barry's excellent performance. Barry speaks the opening lines and when he starts to sing this number really takes flight! "Can't Get Enough Of Your Love, Babe" makes me want to dance every time I hear it. Of course, Rod Stewart's "Maggie May" is a highlight of this album; he sings this to perfection and the guitars help the number a whole lot. Rod never sounded better. Moreover, listen for the great Elton John doing his awesome "Bennie And The Jets." "Bennie And The Jets" is a live track; and this song about a fictional rock star was a huge hit for Sir Elton!
Diana Ross sings her beautiful, heartrending ballad "Ain't No Mountain High Enough;" Diana never misses a beat and the percussion enhances the natural beauty of this song. Listen also for Bachman-Turner Overdrive performing their big hit "You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet." "You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet" may come under the category of pop music; but it rocks hard, too. "Love Will Keep Us Together" by Captain & Tennille is another highlight of this album; it sounds every bit as good today as it did all those years ago when I first heard it.
"Escape (The Piña Colada Song)" is my least favorite number on this album. It's well done but I never truly loved it.
The album ends really well with Abba singing "Dancing Queen" and Donna Summer's "Bad Girls." Great numbers!
The CD doesn't have any liner notes because Hip-O Records and Universal Music wanted to save paper. (This is their eco-friendly packaging idea.) Instead, on the inside of the thin cardboard jacket we get the song credits and chart positions for each song. The artwork on the packaging is very well done; and the quality of the sound is excellent.
Overall, this single CD has just about as much great 70's pop music as you can get on a single CD. If you like this album you may want to try CD box sets that have 1970's pop music on them.
