CD Reviews

Stop thinkin that missin linx used "dre's" beat...

"I like the album of course...too many of the songs were old news to me--bein a hip hop junky that i am. But the big thing is, when people hear that missin linx cut, the first thing they think of is...oh thats that dre beat! NAAAH, cause it isnt man...i heard this track on LAID IN FULL, and that came out waaay before dre came out with his 2001. Just to clarify to all u suckas that dont know that. Dont get me wrong, I dig dre's beats, but thats all he's about. Anyway, back to the album--its a definate pick up for those who havent heard most of the songs on it already--fin"
Great Hip-Hop Compilation With No Filler!
Paul H. | USA | 07/23/2000
(5 out of 5 stars)

"For those who want a hip-hop compilation that features 100% dope material, they need to look no further than 2001: A Rhyme Odyssey. Most of the material is previously released, but if you don't buy vinyl, there hasn't really been any place to get them. Even if you already have the 12"'s, this compilation still brings together fourteen great tracks on CD. Featured are Big L's (R.I.P.) classic "Ebonics", the song that blew up right before he passed away, Missin' Linx's "M.I.A.", which used the beat Dre used for "The Next Episode" first, and Dilated Peoples' "Global Dynamics", which is featured on their "Third Degree" 12". Also, this compilation finally brings the long out-of-print classic remix to Common's "Soul By The Pound" back in print. Primeridian, whom I've never heard of, also brings an very nice track to the table with "Mental Void". Nice tracks by The High & Mighty, The Giant (a.k.a. A.G. of D.I.T.C. fame), Swollen Members, Afu-Ra, Pablo, Dr. Oop, People Under The Stairs, and I.G. Off & Hazadous are featured here. If you are a fan of hip-hop, pick this up ASAP. This could be the hip-hop compilation of the year."

"So you want an album thats got a collection of fresh talent on it? Look no further here on `2001:A Rhyme Odyssey' is the answer. Over 50 minutes starring the likes of the High & Mighty with their big sounds on `The Meaning' and Missin Linx's `M.I.A." as heard on Westwood in instrumental form. Commmon's rare `Soul By The Pound' from 93' features and the excellent Afu-Ra ( who will be massive) stars with `Whirlwind Thru Cities'. Other contenders include People Under The Stairs, Dilated Peoples, Big L, Swollen Members and Pablo."
