"Uto Ughi is a formidable violinist whose work is not nearly as well known as it should be. I have two other CDs by him, Tartini and Paganini Concertos, both of which are splendid. The present CD will have you coming out of your skin. It consists of live performances, the Beethoven from 1970 and the Tchaikovsky from 1981. The performances are simply outstanding. As the CD annotator comments, these renditions are in the Italian style, with an emphasis on beauty of tone and technical suppleness. There are many studio recodings that sound less technically secure than this. The accompaniments are strong and well played, while the sound engineering is excellent, especially for live recordings. The one drawback is that you can hear one or two trucks driving by during the Beethoven. I am a bit surprised by the asking prices for these used copies. The CD was issued only in 1999, with a list price of $6.99. You would be well advised to search around for it."
