CD ReviewsThe Paswonky Serenaders Bomojaz | South Central PA, USA | 10/11/2005 (4 out of 5 stars) "As with most of his albums, Marty Grosz has once again brought together some of the finest traditional players working in the New York area for this tribute to the great Fats Waller. Unlike most such albums, however, the tunes played here are not the usual suspects; in fact, only one (LOOKIN' GOOD BUT FEELIN' BAD) was ever recorded by Fats himself, though all were written by him. This track, taken at the quickest tempo of any selection on the CD, is a highlight. So too is PRISONER OF LOVE (not the Russ Colombo standard), recorded here for the first time, which is delightful with its chromatically descending patterns. Sidemen include Peter Ecklund (c) Dan Barrett (tb) Joe Muranyi (cl/ss - sounding very much like Jimmy Noone on clarinet in places) and Keith Ingham (p). Some of the tunes are not up to the standards of Fats's best known tunes, and the band plays quite a few in a medium-tempo fit-for-dancing manner; Grosz fans will be delighted with this CD, though, as should most people interested in the music of the '20s-'30s played in a delightful style. Nice!"
