This collection contains highlights from Mozart's five greatest operas and not only is the perfect collection for those wishing to get their Mozartian feet wet, but often selects the ideal choice for each particular excerpt. It's almost a who's who in Mozart nowadays (Bryn Terfel, Cecilia Bartoli, Renée Fleming, and Samuel Ramey) as well as a who-was-who-recently: Kiri Te Kanawa at her most melting as the Countess in Figaro, Leontyne Price as a fiery, agile Donna Elvira, Cesare Valetti--still unbeatable after 40 years as Don Ottavio--and Cesare Siepi as a dangerously sexy seducer in Don Giovanni. Birgit Nilsson's Donna Anna is a tad clumsy and, at times, one wishes that conductor Georg Solti would lighten up, but otherwise this is a splendid hour-plus of the Wolfman. It's recommended to one and all. --Robert Levine

CD Reviews

Pretty Good
03/30/2001
(4 out of 5 stars)

"I like this a lot. The performances in general are quite lively, articulate, and heartfelt, which is essential for Mozart more so than many other composers, and is more than can be said of many recordings out there. Ramey's Figaro, Te Kanawa's Countess, Price's Donna Elvira, Valetti's Don Ottavio, Deutekom's Queen of the night seem to stand out compared to others I've heard. Bartoli is best in the 3 duets with Terfel. She appears 5 times total; if you like her that's good. If you think she's OK (like me), then it's a bit of an overkill.I think 4 stars is about right - some better recordings could have been found for a few of the tracks (e.g. Or sai chi l'onore), and there's a lot of Bartoli. But, there's lots of good stuff here, and some of the recordings are among the best available."
