CD Reviews
Vive la France!
junkette | Tennessee, USA | 09/12/2009
(5 out of 5 stars)
"I can only critique these five CDs in terms of enjoyment, not orchestral and choral technique. My experience with classical music is primarily from a dozen years of piano lessons; thus, I am familiar with many mainstream classical pieces by name and composer.
Oddly, I fell in love with French classical in a most unusual place--Disney World. In Epcot, the beautiful French scenes in the travelogue at the French pavilion, Impressions de France, are backed with snips of music from French composers. I long ago purchased the Epcot CD that included the soundtrack, and I still have the typed song list that Disney first made available when so many people wanted to know about the music.
The five CDs in this set include many full versions of the music from the Disney movie. You have the familiar--the magical Sorcerer's Apprentice, the haunting Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun, Ravel's Bolero, Bizet's Carmen, Faure's Requiem, and Saint-Saens Symphony No. 3 in C minor with my favorite movement of all, Maestoso, with the majestic organ you hear during the ascent up the Eiffel Tower in Impressions de France. There are many more French classics that are new to me and that I'm sure will become favorites, too.
So please excuse this amateur's review if you're a classical expert. I'm only reporting on satisfaction, and these CDs will be bringing pleasant listening for a long time to come.
