CD Reviews

Just Another U.K. Album?...
Jeff T. Jesmorh | Mexico City. | 12/09/2008
(5 out of 5 stars)

"There's one thing that this recording possibly means!. At last, seems that, Eddie Jobson can see the real thing, the complete picture: The great band that U.K. really were, with Allan Holdswort and Bill Bruford on board the band, and the fantastic chemistry that they reflected. Ok! I know that, through the years, there have been some complains of this two guys about the reasons that pulled them out of the band: They were fired because Eddie wanted Allan to make exactly the same solo every night! (absurd!) between other things... and this made Allan so miserable that literally obliged him to leave the band. What a disgrace, having reached only with one album, a superstatus level in the Progressive rock scene aside bands like Yes, King Crimson or Emerson Lake & Palmer.

Eddie Jobson was about to be a member of the renewed YES in 1983, 90125 with Trebor Rabin, and appeared in the "Owner of A Lonely Heart" video. In early 2002 Eddie Jobson re edited the Allan Holdsworth solo Album, ROAD GAMES, 1983 (...What?!)(... that Eddie did what??...) Road Games. In 2007 released the U.K.'s LIVE IN BOSTON, a 1978 live recording. And now in 2008, once again Eddie Jobson presents us, with an extreme polished quality sound, another amazing recording of that period of time (1978): LIVE IN AMERICA. that seems to be the same as the LIVE IN BOSTON recording in a low budget with some extra tracks; but again, with Allan Holdsworth and Bill Bruford on board. ¿Could it be that Eddie Jobson is trying to "mend the broken pieces" of what in some time could has been? or is the need to have total control over the Caroline Records rights to offer a new remastered version of the same live recording? for me, it's obvious that maybe, in some way, he has recognized at last, the Bruford/Holdsworth talents (or maybe he have some old regrets?)... this year he has relaunched another version of U.K.: the UKZ band... but whatever!, in the end, the only persons that win are the Fans, because the amount of brilliant live progressive moments that were spread over us by this amazing band, now presented again in this new CD format... (hopefully maybe Eddie wants to please us releasing a 1978's U.K. LIVE DVD RECORDING. It would be really HISTORIC!)

The recorded live music feature songs like: The Only thing She Needs, Carring No Cross, Caesar's Palace Blues and Rendezvouz from the U.K.'s second album Danger Money; and The Smile Has Left Your Eyes and Christina from the early ASIA's repertoire (Wetton's compositions)... And there is still a 1978 great bootleg THE ROAD TEST (between others!), that features Bruford songs like "Forever Untill Sunday" from the second solo album ONE OF A KIND (1979) with the virtuoso Holdsworth playing in all these tracks So I think LIVE IN AMERICA, will be a must for Fans as time is still passing by... so it's up to you!... or is this recording for us, just another U.K. album?... Good Luck!"
Great addition at a bargain price

"uk "live in america" is the same recording as "live in boston" at a fourth of the price, and it even includes some wetton solo recordings which are, at best, just ok. it is great to hear "the only thing she needs" and "carrying no cross" by the original band (personally witnessed at the cleveland agora in june of 78. the cover depicts the bozzio era uk with names of the original line up .... weird..."
Yet another "Same Performance" Live Release from U.K. in Bos
David Dreyfus | Santa Cruz, CA | 03/20/2010
(2 out of 5 stars)

"Now that UK 1978 Tour featuring the awesome 4 CDs are more common on ebay why would anyone want to buy more than one version of the "Paradise Club" Live in Boston radio broadcast performance when they could look around the internet a bit & find live gems from the 1978 UK awesome 4 Tour from New Jersey or New Orleans or Virginia or Philadelphia (last show of tour I believe) or Chicago (where I witnessed a tight, well tuned UK of 4) or Cleveland where UK really started to shine up those rough spots (come on John, is writing out some lyrics to Caesars verse 2 really harder than flubbing your lyric improve on stage night after night?) Now I know where that lyric/song came from. Being tormented with not arriving with your deep thought "All the gold in Vegas won't bring Caesar back from dead" night after night during June, July & August 1978... Just couldn't come up with that line or anything else for that matter like that during the whole North American tour as witnessed on countless UK (radio broadcast recorded) unofficial CDs. Perhaps the problem was "lines" for John rather than one particular lyric line in a partially improvised sort of encore...

Even if "Caesar's" Weighs in to why (they) keep releasing the same exact Boston performance that doesn't out weigh the great performances from other cites recorded for radio broadcast during summer 1978. The Chicago, Cleveland & Philly shows in particular representing the awesome 4 best as far as being a partially improvising live band (Allan, Bill & even a little bit by Eddie & John) with progressive rock sensibilities. Bottom line here is buy this CD if you don't already have at least some version of the UK Live in Boston performance otherwise pass..."
