From the super funk laced offering Funk 4 U-nity , the George Benson-esque My Heart & Soul to the all out buckle U-rself in, four-on-the-floor jam Soul-ism , U offers a little somethin for everyone and should aptly wet the whistle of his growing legion of U.S. fans.

CD Reviews

Great sound and versatility.
for jazz music's sake | Warsaw, Poland | 05/10/2009
(4 out of 5 stars)

"U-nam is the pen name of a brlliant, young, talented French guitarist, the new rising star in the Smooth Jazz field, Parisian born and Los Angeles based Emmanuel Abiteboul at his third effort.

If you like Benson-ish guitar players over smooth grooves then U-Nam hits the bill.

One thing all of the tracks share is density in sound and mood.

Quality instrumentals like "Shine On", and "Soul Boy Reincarnation" ooze a feel good factor.

Joining U-Nam are a widely talented group consisting of Soul singer Marva King, veteran sax master Najee and the renowned drummer Michael White and a bunch of excellent French musicians as well, the Paris horns (Thierry Farrugia, Christian Martinez and Bernard Camoin), Denis Bennarosh (percussion), Franck Sitbon (clavinet, Fender Rhodes, acoustic piano, organ and background vocals.

The album is inspired by the music and musicians that U-Nam was listening to when he was younger and is a very pleasant, refreshing mix of Neo-Soul, Funk, Jazz, Pop & R&B.

Martha & The Vandellas's classic tune "Dancing In The Street" receives a refreshing contemporary make-up, with the help of Marva King, who hits the dance floor with her powerful and soullful voice.

The slow ballad "Losing My Mind" has much of Stevie Wonder's style and a lot of European music culture.

Najee on sax and flute is fantastic on the beautiful track "Soul Boy Reincarnation", while U-Nam's guitar flows throughout from insanely complicated licks to his unique soulful melodic touch with uncanny ease.

Other highligts are "U Could Make It Happen" and the closing fast paced song "Soul...ism".

I am loving it.

You will like it.

Enjoy !

"I was slightly disappointed in UNam's present CD after enjoying his previous one. Some of the songs were somewhat boring. Maybe I was spoiled by the intensity of "Street Life" and some of his other original songs on the previous CD. Hopefully the next one will be better.
