Synopsis

Product Description
Until the early 50 s, Maynard Ferguson's fantastic technique was often said to obscure every other aspect of his work. With the tracks at hand, he revealed himself as a fine all-round musician, band leader and brilliant soloist, both in trumpet and valve trombone. Bill Homan whose works can be considered as some of the most representative of the West Coast school of jazz once said, "I've always tried to write things that sound like jazz, not like Bach revisited." Thanks to his arrangements and to the exceptional musicians who perform them, Ferguson expresses himself in a way he had never previously found possible.

CD Reviews

One of Maynard's most musical albums
PhxHorn | Phoenix, AZ | 12/26/2006
(4 out of 5 stars)

"If you're looking for lots of high notes from the MF horn, this ain't it. But if you're looking for one of the most musical albums of Maynard's career, this is it. The arrangements are by the great Bill Holman, and MF has assembled a backing band of west coast greats. MF keeps to the mid register for the most part (but not all) and he and the band concentrate on playing in the pocket and making music."
For all the "doubters"

"There are legions upon legions of Maynard fans throughout the world. And the most dedicated of those fans would always fume when they read / heard a critic say "he doesn't play jazz". Of course , Maynard was most known for his stratospheric performances that left audiences and listeners gasping at his talent. And the critics would scoff "he doesn't play jazz". This recording is for them-----and for all of us. On this lovingly assembled package , Maynard spends most of his time swinging WITH the band in the lower and mid-register.Of course , there are moments when the signature scream notes come through , but for the most part , it is a beautiful compilation of Maynard circa 55 and 56 , showcasing his "jazz" chops. You won't be disappointed , if anything , it would further your admiration for his truly unique skill-set."
