Twista- Kamikaze

"Twista's latest album is "Kamikaze" (2004). Hailing from Chicago, Twista is a Rap veteran who has finally managed to get the support of a label (Atlantic) that can market him properly to the mainstream. Guest appearances come from: 8 Ball,Too Short,Ludacris, Kayne West, Jamie Foxx, Jazze Pha, Freeway, Bennie Franks, Danny Boy, T.I., Liffy Strokes, Cee Lo, Anthony Hamilton, Memphis Bleek and Young Chris. Twista tears up the opening track "Get Me", showing his hunger for the game, love for his city while facing his haters. Next he takes things back to his Adrenaline Rush days with "Kill Us All". The lead single is the standout love track "Slow Jamz" feat. Kayne West and Jamie Foxx. It was good to see this cut explode on the radio, its a memorable collabration, what surprised me most about it was that Comedian/Actor Jamie Foxx can sing well. Next two tracks "Get That Doe" (Ain't It Man) and "Still Feels So Good" flow through nicely. Can't say I am really feeling "Drinks" or "Badunkadunk", both seem like filler. Thankfully "One Last Time" picks things up again, Twista's fastpaced flow and chorus shine on this cut. Freeway and Beenie Franks drop in for another good cut with "Show's Over". Ludacris distinct drawl mixed with Twista's trademark flow makes "Higher" an intresting collabration, whether you like this one or not you most likely will remember it. "Snoopin" feat. Danny Boy is a chilled out Rap/R & B collabration. Twista gets reflective on the substantial thought provoking "Hope" feat. Cee Lo, the messages within this track are very positive, this tracks special because Twista absolutely takes things to another level with real and relevant lyrics and Cee-Lo delivers a memorable chorus. Twista and R&B singer Anthony Hamilton drop a nice rendition of a well known track with the upbeat "Lovely Day" (which takes me back to the hit "Player Holiday"). Twista is on good terms with Dame Dash and Rocafella (who want to sign him) so it makes sense that he link up with Rocafellas Memphis Bleek, Young Chris and Freeway for "Art and Life". I have to say I am impressed by this one, it's good to see that Twista is getting the chance to get the commercial attention he deserves after years of being in the background. There are a few tracks I dont feel on this IE "Like a 24", however the majority are good giving this album continuity. The mix of diverse musical cuts make "Kamikaze" a refreshing album which I highly recommend for the collection."

"It's been a long time comin' for Twista to finally break out into the limelight, but with an album of this caliber, I think it was better this way. Lyrically, Twista is in a league of his own, and has often outshined people on their own songs, which makes it pretty hard for people to hold it down together with Twista on his own. But luckily, most of the tracks showcase Twista on his own or with people just doin' the hooks, such as the radio-made "So Sexy" w/ R. Kelly. Twista pretty much kills every track he is on, including the opening two tracks "Get Me" and "Kill Us All". Of course everybody knows how good "Slow Jams" was w/ Kanye West and Jamie Foxx, but I think it should have ONLY been on Twista's cd. The Kanye West-produced "Overnight Celebrity" is a standout track too. The best song on here though, "One Last Time", is a track where Twista is not even rappin' in his normal fast pace, but rappin' at an average speed, in which he songs better than most people who can ONLY rap at a regular speed. Another highlite, which closes out the album is the stutter-step neat of "Art & Life" w/ Memphis Bleek, Freeway, and Young Chris. This song would have been better though if Young Chris was replaced w/ Beanie Sigal, and maybe replacin' Bleek w/ Jay-Z. But hey, you can't ask too much since this album gave us so much anyway. Here's to Twista comin' back even stronger, hopefully with the same marketing and publicity as before."
Did You Even Read Your Own Review Before You Saved It?

"This last reviewer obviously lived under a rock for the last 15 years, is a white guy, or is just getting out of jail because his review is littered with comments that were WAY out of touch with hip hop.
1) "What happened to good rappers like 2pac and Notorious B.I.G., who were about the message and not the money?"
You obviously haven't heard Biggie's "Life After Death" album which overflows with the same content. And 2 Pac? What was the message on "All Eyes On Me"? Was the message that he hated the east coast? And don't even get me started on "Made Ni@@aZ" feat The Outlawz from the "Gang Related" soundtrack? And I quote "I'm a Bad Boy killa / Murder muthaf**kas daily / the feds trail me / so my alias' Makaveli"? And let's not forget that he's draped in diamonds and tossing money everywhere in the video. Now what was the message there, that he's a rich murderer? Please. Fill me in if I missed something. And remember, no matter what label Tupac was on when he made those records, the fact remains.....that Tupac DID make those records.
2) "What happened to the songs about violence, political issues and annoyance with the media? Well, Eminem, 50 Cent and Dr. Dre do that, so I'd choose them over idiots like Twista anyday."
"Violence, POLITICAL ISSUES, and annoyance with the media"? While 2 out of 3 isn't bad, name ONE song where 50 speaks on political issues. Eminem tried on "White America", but that hardly qualifies as "political". And Dr. Dre doesn't cover any of those topics...well, he used to cover violence. But his presence doesn't count behind the mic and anyone with an ear for good music knows this. If they're political, then I guess acts like Dead Prez, Immortal Technique, and Public Enemy are the second coming of the black panther movement, huh? Riiiiiiight.
3) "Em and 50 have actually been through s*** in their lives so they have actual street cred."
WTF is "street cred"? Please. Em has no street cred. He's not even from Detroit. Stop that. Maybe 50 did have some "street cred" when he came out, but if you've been to NY within the last two months you'd know that he's beginning to lose his mind and what little cred he has.
4)"So don't waste your time with this commercial crap. If you must get commercial crap, stick with Chingy or Ludacris."
What?! Em, Dre, and 50 aren't commercial? I tell you what, go and purchase the "Up In Smoke Tour" on DVD and look into that crowd that they are performing for. Tell me how many thugs, gangstas, and underground heads you see in that crowd. And when was the last time you saw 50 and he wasn't advertising his clothing line or his brand of tennis shoes? Now if THAT ain't commercial, I don't know what is. That whole Shady/Aftermath/G Unit camp is as commercial as it gets in this rap biz. Wake up and take off the blinders man.
And remember this, back in the day doesn't begin when B.I.G. and Pac came out. There were rappers before them and they had skills too. Rappers back in the day had to have skills to get on, not lots of jewelry and rims. 50 has no skills. He's spitting average lines over hot beats. That don't make a tight MC. Same with Dre. Em has skills, but he's losing steam. Let's be real.....you're biased and it's showing.
I don't normally stray away from writing reviews, but those dumb comments were too out of touch for me to ignore."
Twista is back with his own CD and it's about time

"After appearing on various Rocafella collaborations such as "Is That Your Chic" w/Memphis Bleek, Jay Z & Missy Elliott, "Champions" w/Kanye West, Beanie Sigel, and Cam'ron from the "Paid In Full" soundtrack and "Poppin' Tags" with Jay Z, Killer Mike and Big Boi from Outkast, Twista has finally released another CD. Although "Kamikaze" was released on Atlantic Records, it seems as if Twista really wants to be a Rocafella soldier. The first single from "Kamikaze" is the Kanye West produced "Slow Jamz" which features Twista, Kanye West and Jamie Foxx. If you haven't heard this song by now then you must not have access to a radio or basic cable television. This song has been heard constantly and for good reason. The concept makes sense and this is a good way for people who may not have known who Twista was to get introduced to him. "Get Me" gets the CD off to a good start and if you still disbelieve in his skills, Twista comes back strong on one of my favorite tracks on his CD in "Kill Us All". Toxic, who produces 7 songs on "Kamikaze", definitely has his best work on this song and Twista takes over a 4 minute lyrical ride on the track. On "Higher", Twista employs Ludacris on the track and the two artists have a memorable collaboration on the track. If you have any kind of system in your car or truck then you will enjoy this track. Although Twista starts off hard, he definitely tones things down for the ladies and for the clubs, almost even too much. The best of these songs being another Kanye West produced track in "Overnight Celebrity". Kanye samples the classic Lenny Williams slow jam, "'Cause I Love You", to perfection. This should definitely be the next single. This is my favorite song on this CD by far and is worth the price of the CD alone. The Pied Piper and his lovely group JS shows up on "So Sexy". Once again this track is for the ladies and R Kelly proves why he is one of the best producers in the game today. The only negative aspect of all the party jams is that there are entirely too many on this CD. "Pimp On" w/Eightball and Too Short, "Still Feels So Good", "Drinks", "Badunkadunk" and "Like a 24" w/TI and Liffy Stokes, as well as the aforementioned "Slow Jamz", "Overnight Celebrity" and "So Sexy" means that over 60% of Twista's songs are all about partying and clubbin'.However, Twista definitely makes up for this with inspirational songs like "Hope" w/Cee Lo and "Sunshine" w/Anthony Hamilton. The skills are defintely there for Twista. He just has to take advantage of the gift he has and make a well rounded CD. Even still, "Kamikaze" is worth having in your collection. If you are a fan of any of Twista's previous collaborations then you will enjoy this CD.James' Top 51) Slow Jamz w/Kanye West & Jamie Foxx
2) Overnight Celebrity w/Kanye West
3) Kill Us All
4) So Sexy w/R Kelly & JS
5) Sunshine w/Anthony Hamilton"
