Formed in the mid-'90s by members of Crayon and Wimp Factor 14, Tullycraft continues to proudly carry the banner of the "cuddlecore" movement that swept the nation, or rather, the nation's sensitive geeks in the early '90s. The band's influences actually go further back, as its giddy, fast-strummed melodies and thin drumming hark back to C86, the classic NME-curated compilation that launched an era of British indie pop, from the Pastels to Heavenly. Led by bassist-singer Sean Tollefson, Tullycraft happily crowds its insular world with an abundance of references that will captivate pop scenesters. For instance, their third album's opener, "Twee," mentions a Sarah Records compilation tape in the first line, before rallying around a scornfully proud cry of "Fuck me, I'm twee!" And Tullycraft isn't afraid to scratch their peers, as they show on "Orange Cake Mix Song": "The rhythms are weak and you can't sing along/ Does the world really need another Orange Cake Mix song?/ I don't think so." OK, so this isn't Ja Rule vs. DMX, but in indie rock circles, it's pretty hardcore. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

CD Reviews

Tullycraft rock my socks off!

(5 out of 5 stars)

"After falling off the indie radar for a couple years Tullycraft came back with their best album to date. Packed with hits like "Wild Bikini", "Cowgirls on Parade", "Glitter & Twang", "Knockout" and the instant clasic "Twee" I can't help but sing along and dance. I love this record! Even my brother likes it and he listens to Korn. Both Tullycraft and Wilco have been in my CD player all year."
Pop rocking!

"tullycraft's CD "Beat Surf Fun" is making the cool air of winter blow away and reminding me of warm weather ahead! This is such a front to back good record, each song really compliments the next, from fast numbers, to mid-tempo, and some real sweet slow songs, it's gonna make my compilation CD's fill out nicely! I've been playing the CD in my car on the way to work, and I swear it puts me in such a good mood(and I need it!). This record would make a great gift to that indie popster friend of yours that you are wondering what to get them, it is going to be a classic, on the sublime tip!"
Worth it just for Twee alone...

"Let's face it, Tullycraft is an indiepop institution by now (and if not, they should be). It took me forever to get around to getting this, but it was worth it in the end. The guys in the band seem really cool, they never break the first rule (i.e. [this is good]), and their lyrics are biting witty. This CD is best to listen to when aimlessly surfing through friendster profiles, taking a road trip to San Diego, or making out with your girlfriend/boyfriend. It's also arguablly their most accomplished effort to date."
