Synopsis

Album Description
Bred and spread in Los Angeles, Tsar is a band that has kept the hedonistic ideals of Sunset Strip rock n' roll alive since 2000. Counting the likes of Redd Kross, T. Rex, The Archies, and The Dead Boys among their primary influences, the foursome are releasing their blisterning new disc "Band-Girls-Money" this June. Band-Girls-Money is all shiny hooks and raw riffs, the tracks are trademark TSAR: quirky rave-ups filled with chiming melodies and jackhammer choruses. Village Voice music critic Chuck Eddy wrote, "TSAR pounds and swings the boogie harder and sweeter than ever." TSAR solidified their kick-ass live stature at this year's South By Southwest Music Festival in Austin, TX with one of the hotter sets seen by the jaded music industry scenesters in a long while. Having played to a packed house at the Hard Rock Cafe, the band jumped off the stage to catch a flight back to LA to appear in a major network TV commercial less than 24 hrs later. Just another day for these fast rising stars. That commercial, for Nestle Crunch and Napster, will be on boob tubes coast to coast from May throughout the summer.

CD Reviews

Get While the Getting's Good
M. Donnelly | Denver, CO USA | 08/19/2005
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This album just does not quit. It does not quit hammering solid, driven track after hook-filled track into your throat. It does not quit making you turn back to the stereo to turn it up just a little bit more. It does not quit going through your head, demanding you play it again. "Love Explosion" and "Superdeformed" key this album; "Conquerer Worm" and "You Can't Always Want What You Get" exemplify Whalen's range as a songwriter and singer. Dan Kern's guitar is rangy and majestic throughout, punk power at times, soaring counterpoint at others. The original Tsar rhythm section was tuned and tight when this was recorded, and the less polished production compared to Tsar's first album actually highlights the lockstep proficiency of this band through every hook and turn. If you like rock and roll with punch and panache, and this album isn't in your collection, on your iPod, whatever, get while the getting's good."
Catchy and hook filled

"The second album by tsar is a little rougher than their debut as far as production but it's a better collection of songs in my opinion. The songs are just plain catchy and they all have hook filled riffs that will stick in your head all day. I first heard of this band by seeing them on some random Tv show on saturday morning, the lead singer had an american flag draped on his back like a cape and well initially their music sounded like all the other power pop bandwagon warp tour jumpers, but I decided to give them another chance after seeing their album at the local used cd shop. I was not disappointed because what seperates tsar is that they can really rock and write quality songs that are addicting. This whole album is really good, but my favorites have to be " I'm Straight" and "Conqueror Worm". I would describe their sound as 1970s glam rock along the lines of T Rex and 1980s rock like Guns and Roses. Tsar are a good band that play rock."
