Synopsis

Brassed Off covers some of the same subject matter as the more popular The Full Monty, released a year later in 1997, but the soundtracks are polar opposites. Brassed Off tells the story of a group of Yorkshire coal miners who face an end to their livelihood when it appears their mine is going to be shut down. To keep some semblance of normalcy in their lives, the miners play in the colliery band, and these performances make up the bulk of the soundtrack, a mix of traditional brass-band music, transcriptions (Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez with a solo flügelhorn replacing the guitar), and orchestral selections. Alternately rousing and touching, the soundtrack is all the more poignant because the music is played by the Grimethorpe Colliery Band, a real-life ensemble that struggled to survive when its mine was closed. --David Horiuchi

CD Reviews

Music great, recording so so . . .

"After recently getting back into brass band playing, a friend loaned us the movie Brassed Off. The music was great in the movie, which was billed as a comedy, but it was really not. We wanted to hear more of the music and bought the sound track. The recording quality is not very good, which is a disappointment. Other than that, it's a fun CD if you like very well played marches and brass band pieces. Incidentally, in the movie, the British accent is so strong we had to put on the captioning to follow the lines!
