CD ReviewsMy Favourite Toyah Album ILikeAmazon | Arlington, VA USA | 06/23/2001 (5 out of 5 stars) "As an English new-wave priestess with both pop and sci-fi bents, Toyah is an acquired taste. She and her band have straight-forward pop like "street creature", "thunder in the mountains", and "good morning universe" which could be played by any mainstream rock radio station. On the other hand, the bizarre creeps in, like "creepy room" about drugs and psychoanalysis and "the druids" which has apocalyptic themes. What I like most about this album is how the music manages to be listenable, interesting, and challenging at the same time. Toyah's "Sheep Farming in Barnett" and "The Blue Meaning" are more purist and intense albums, embodying darker new-wave and less pop. Try listening to her "Insects" on a dark steamy night and see if you don't involuntarily reach for a fly swatter. I'd rank this album along Lene Lovich's "Stateless" and Nina Hagen's "Nunsexmonkrock" for overall enjoyment. If you can handle the occasional pop/fluff, this album will reward repeat listenings. If you want a harder-core experience, pick up Toyah's "The Blue Meaning". p.s. A stylistic note: I don't believe in putting commas within quotations unless the quotation is part of written speech. It's an anachronism that needs to go, IMHO." Enter another world ILikeAmazon | 07/28/2000 (5 out of 5 stars) "Enter another world when listening to Toyah's The Changeling. A timeless masterpiece that treks about uninhibited and mindblowing in the realms of sound and imagery. Powerful lyric writing from her inner self, Toyah is an incredible artist to check out.Remenescent of Bowie's Ziggy years crossed with Kate Bush's The Dreaming period, if you dig those two, you may enjoy this."
