Album Description

This recording features exciting new performances of popular classics by three of America's most important composers: Leonard Bernstein, George Gershwin, and Duke Ellington. The Center City Brass Quintet, one of the world's pre-eminent brass ensembles, performs these favorites with the same musical excitement and technical brilliance they have brought to their earlier recordings of recital repertoire, such as "Brass Quintets" on Collins Classics, called "one of the all-time great brass recordings" by the American Record Guide (July/August 1997). A brand-new arrangment of music from "On The Town" by Emmy-Award winning composer Anthony DiLorenzo is coupled with the classic setting of "West Side Story" by Jack Gale, performed by brass players the world over but never before recorded. Also included is Gale's version of "Porgy and Bess", and Robert Elkjer's arrangements of three Duke Ellington classics, including "Caravan". This is a CD anyone will enjoy; and it's a must for brass lovers!

"On the Town is one of the most outstanding recordings for brass quintet released in a very long time. The musicianship is amazing and the arrangements work incredibly well for this instrumental setting. The Center City Brass have made three recordings to date and they get better with each release. This brass quintet sets the standard for all brass quintets and ranks among the best (Empire Brass and Canadian Brass) as far as musicianship and virtuosity. As far as the music goes, most of these arrangements are presented for the first time in a brass quintet setting and whether a fan of brass music or just a fan of Bernstein, Gershwin, etc. you will find this recording musically satisfying. I highly recommend this CD to anyone searching for an enjoyable and impressive listening experience."
