Amazon.comHaydn's "Tost" quartets, atypically published as two sets of three each instead of one set of six, are not as well known as some of the later quartets, which just goes to prove how many of Haydn's masterpieces are neglected. Here they are being heard under the best possible auspices. The Salomon Quartet, which plays on period instruments, has obviously spent a good deal of time with this music. Every detail in these performances is carefully considered, the balances are consistently well judged, and the originality of Haydn's thought comes across splendidly. For Haydn-lovers this is as good as it gets. --Leslie Gerber
