Search - Haydn, Salomon Quartet :: Tost II Quartets

It's tempting to repeat word-for-word the review of the companion to this disc, Hyperion 66971, which contains the other half of Haydn's "Tost" series, the three quartets published as Op. 54. If you need to, you can refer to that for praise of Haydn's work in general and of the superb performances of this period instrument group. But for the moment, since these are not cheap CDs--even though they're worth every penny!--consider buying only one of the discs and becoming thoroughly familiar with it before buying the other. That way you can learn to appreciate the amazing individuality of Haydn's many string quartets, and the superlative detail of this ensemble's performances. Like great wine, these discs deserve consideration in leisure. --Leslie Gerber
