CD Reviews

Tony's Toronto Trio ON FIRE
D. Patt | Toronto, Canada | 12/07/2008
(5 out of 5 stars)

"You're gonna love how smokin' Tony plays REAL B-3 here.

His Toronto Trio is on fire; the music feels great!

So many highlights ... favorites are the hip/extremely FUNKY,

"Ode to Billie Joe" and "Slow Down Sagg" (from Jimmy Smith's ROOT DOWN classic). Tony plays with a new cutting edge sound way beyond traditional barriers expected from this sort of trio date.

Every year my friends and I never miss Tony in Toronto; listening to this live CD reminds us of how (on stage) Ted, Vito and Tony quickly became soaked in sweat. At times Tony sounds af if he's trying to dismantle the Leslie cabinet by pushing the organ till the big speaker explodes. It's all (nasty fun) good.

The #1 MOST highly recommended jazz organ CD of 2008!

STELLAR PERFORMANCE
collector | 03/12/2009
(5 out of 5 stars)

"The 7 tracks contain a lot of ingenious improvisation from Messrs Monaco, Quinlan and Rezza. The last 2 tracks are another jam version of the first 2 tracks. I would've preferred it if they put in 2 different songs though.

The energy in the music is relentless, you cannot stop yourself from moving when you listen to it. The slower songs are a good break from all that physical exercise it takes you through. In the slower songs, the melodic lines woven by Monaco and Quinlan are soothing and beautiful... then you are ready for another thumping jam with Slow Down Sagg. Slow Down Sagg features a fantastic solo from Quinlan. If you love outside jazz lines, Quinlan will not disappoint you.
