"Yeah, the sole previous review of this record may have been a touch on the basic side, but its enthusiasm is fundamentally sound. Since Sabino--his debut as a leader--was released, Malaby has become a major voice on tenor, arguably one of the very best players currently on the scene, but that's just his reputation catching up with his talent. The writing here is very lyrical, very emotional, often with a Southwestern/Spanish air (Malaby's from Arizona and, according to All Music Guide, partly of Mexican descent), as some of the titles attest. And the playing is just gorgeous all around. If you know these guys, this record is a no-brainer, especially at 12 bucks. Formanek and Rainey, post-boppers with impeccable credentials, are consistently fabulous without ever being overbearing--marvels of taste and delicacy. And Ducret's guitar is a perfect foil for Malaby; he can be tender and subdued on ballads and he can cut loose when the mood calls for it. Check out the way Ducret tears it up on the opening track, Ajo Comino. At any rate, if you don't know these guys and you're looking for something quite accessible with just a bit of "outside" edge to it, hesitate not. As McGowan said, this CD is awesome."
