"I recently started collection Tommy Garrett records from used record stores. I bought a pristine copy of Maria Elena on vinyl for just $1. I was amazed at the beauty of this record and the amazing sound Eddie Bracket, the engineer, got on the guitars and percussion. The sound of the vinyl really amazed me! Besides a few cracks and pops here and there, this record sounded better than most cds. I transferred the LP to cd with amazing results. Since then I have collected about 8 Tommy Garrett records... I was excited to buy this cd (Best of 50 Guitars) at a discounted price ($6.98), but when I received it, I was disappointed to find no liner notes and even worse, disappointed by the weak sound quality of the songs themselves. This surely wasn't mastered properly and sounds much thinner than the vinyl recordings I have. Maybe the source recordings were taken from an old tape. I don't know, but in the future I'll just make vinyl transfers myself."

"So that we're talking about the SAME thing, my review is of "The Best of the 50 Guitars" [[B000113EK31]]; FIRST off- it is listed as "Best of the 50 Guitars- Tommy Garrett's 50 Guitars." And 50 Guitar-hungry me, bit into it. WHOA! It does NOT SAY "Tommy Garrett's 50 Guitars!" anywhere! Because it is NOT by Tommy ("Snuff") Garrett & HIS 50 Guitars! Because it is a sort-of rip-off, that's why there is no information on the JC Lid sheet. The ONLY place there is some info- is printed on the CD itself. WHO produced it.
I read some of the other reviews... those of you who DO have some of the 50 Guitars original vinyl- GO LISTEN to them! This obvious play on the original 50 Guitar orchestra sound, is nothing but that- a hooker. IF there are even 5 guitars on this particular CD... I'd be amazed. That's why the sound is so bad; it is NOT a "poor" recording @ work! IF there were a way to select 5 NEGATIVE stars, I would have done it. I sent this new "copy" back and asked for a credit.
IF you are looking for GENUINE Tommy (Snuff) Garrett's "50 Guitars" music, I suggest that you go back into Amazon's music and do a search for "Tommy Garrett's 50 Guitars." ALL of the NEW digitized RE-releases are on the "Toucan Label." There is even one that Snuff has his name on, using the original (Liberty Records) jacket art: "50 Guitars Go South of the Border, Volumes 1 to 3." [[ASIN: B000113EK31-50 Guitars Go South of the Border, Vol. 1-3]] The above references to Tommy Garrett and the Toucan label- ARE real "50 Guitars" music. ENJOY."

"The Best of the 50 Guitars
I loved the vinyl recordings of the 50 Guitars. Alas, I got rid of them
years ago. I was happy to see a cd version had been released.
I purchased a copy and was extremly disapointed with the quality (or lack there of.)As the recorning studio that remastered these songs is located in No Hollywood, which is near where I live, I went there to discuss the
disc. I couldn't get by the front desk. I was informed that I would have to contact the seller. I purchased a second copy from another seller in the hopes that they wouldn't all be bad. Yeah, right!
This is absolutily the worst remastering I have ever heard. I worked over 20 years in major Hollwood studios sound departments, and have never heard anything like this cd.
Save your money."

"This particular CD is horribly recorded and the listener can hardly hear even a fraction of the great sound of the 50 Guitars. I grew up with this music and believe me when I say that if it had sounded like that thirty years ago when I first heard it on my father's reel to reel player I would never have listened to it again and probably would have forgotten that they existed! I haven't purchaced any of the individual albums on CD yet such as the South Of The Border albums but I believe that they are actually put out by the record label that originally recorded the albums and would probably be a much better quality. I HIGHLY recommend The 50 Guitars to anyone who is not familiar with them but don't get this particular CD!"
