On Chaotica, sound artist Tom Recchion takes exotica and lounge records to new extremes. Latin rhythms overlap one another, minimalist keyboards kick in, and the buzzing of who-knows-what keeps you on your toes. Recchion does all the work on this 21-track effort, without the use of overdubs, edits, or samplers (in fact, all the tracks here are live improvisations). It's a dizzying mess of prerecorded tape loops, records, and cassettes, but it's thoroughly fascinating as well. Where other found-sound artists often succumb to noise, Recchion remembers that melody (at least most of the time) comes first. --Jason Verlinde
