A Note From the Filmmaker
In making "Wilderness and Spirit, A Mountain Called Katahdin" I knew many people would be seen and heard on screen speaking eloquently about Katahdin. But what would be the "voice" of Katahdin, the mountain itself, in the film? It had to be the music. Tom Myron's luminous, magnificently crafted music and the powerfully moving traditional songs of the Penobscot people, performed by the Keepers of the Penobscot Drum, are what make the mountain speak to the viewer in my film. Together, Tom's music and the traditional Penobscot songs provide the same blend of past and present that the film as a whole embodies- Maine's history, its ongoing efforts to preserve its wilderness and our obligation to future generations to keep the Maine Woods intact. The music on this recording honors the spirit of Katahdin, giving it voice in rhythms and harmonies both newly composed and sung over centuries.
Peace,
Huey
