El Mejor Original Cantante De Salsa
08/01/2000
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This is a wonderful collecion of songs sung by the inimitable Hector Lavoe. His voz and his musica have encantado very many people since the 1970s and shall for many years. My personal favorite on this discocompacto is ''Mi Gente'', although there is not a bad song on this obra fabulosa. Many singers will come (latino and otherwise), and many will go. But there was and shall exist only the original Hector Lavoe. His music is magic."
Another Faux Lavoe recording

"Ok, I have to admit that the music on this album is of a better quality and that is it, but this is NOT Lavoe! The vocalist here is attempting to imitate Lavoe's voice. I would rather have a singer using his own voice sing any Lavoe songs (example: Cheo Feliciano paid homage to Lavoe singing "Todo Tiene Su Final"without imitating Lavoe's voice in "Una Voz Mil Recuerdos", a great album).
Hector Lavoe had a tragic life. There will be many recordings out there that want to pay homage to this great singer. This album is NOT one that does a good job at it.
Spend your money wisely and buy the real Lavoe recordings!"
Not Hector singing, but still a decent tribute

"1st, let me address the review by "A music fan" below - he's wrong: Hector LaVoe DOES NOT sing on this album (it's impossible as he died in 1993)- it's a tribute album from a Columbian Salsa band - Los Titanes (now known as Titanez de La Salsa due to contractual issues) who have been around since '82 - a very good band, by the way - check their music out.

Willie Colon with Hector Lavoe singing was(is) my favorite Salsa band - these guys could really swing - especially on songs like "Timbalero", "Aguanile", "Juana Peña", (none of which are on this album) and countless others which are all considered classics. If you want to hear the real deal and see what set these guys apart from all other bands - get the early Willie Colon albums "El Malo", "La Gran Fuga", "El Juicio", "The Hustler", "Guisando", etc. as well as Hector's solo albums like "El Sabio" (produced by Willie) - you won't be disappointed.

As for the tribute album by Los Titanes - it's not bad as far as tributes as concerned, they're a good, tight band and Harold is definitely the better singer - the song selection could have been better as some of the true classics are not on this album. Overall, not a bad album. Get the originals and do a comparison - you'll see what I mean. Enjoy, nevertheless."
