Album Description

The complicated life of this legendary UK R&B outfit was almost over when this, their penultimate album, appeared in 1970. Astonishingly, by then they were reduced to a duo consisting of original bassist Alan Henderson and U.S. vocalist/percussionist Jerry Cole. It ranges from pounding psychedelia ("I Keep Singing") and snotty garage punk ("Lonely Weekends," a shameless rewrite of "Gloria") to furious rock and roll ("Jo Ann") and even a country ballad ("Take A Little Time"). As the original sleevenotes declared: "The Them sound combines the typical British style with an air of mystery and an atmosphere of excitement... mythical, mystical, Oriental, African, electronic and computer rhythms included.

"As a certified Them fanatic (of the post-Morrison era), it's been a long time in coming, this cd reissue of their brilliant 1970 album. Very few people have ever heard this album (as well as it's 1971 followup "Them In Reality", also now on cd), and fans have had to settle for scratchy lp's or poor quality mp3's. Exactly WHY Them never really broke through as a band from their 1967-1972 era (and their one-off 1979 effort) is one of rock music's great mysteries. Them certainly had a revolving door in membership and scuttled from one style to another, but they never faltered, each lp was as good as (or better than) their predecessors. And this one, "Them", is a masterpiece of acid garage, one of the best albums of 1970 and a work which sounds even better as time moves on.

Don't expect this cd (or, in fact, any of the other Them releases after Van Morrison's exit) to remain in print for too long. It's unlikely that this will be available in five years time, and probably even less than that. Pick them up today. You'll love what you'll hear."
