Synopsis
Amazon.com Cindy Wolfe may have lived in Claremont, California, and Olympia, Washington, before ending up in Vancouver, British Columbia, but true to her band's name, the song stylings on this debut are straight out of the deep South. Born an identical twin in Memphis, Wolfe draws on a flat nasally twang to deliver witty, sarcastic numbers like the title track, "Give the Dog a Bone," and "The Apple of Your Black Eye." The last, cowritten with the New Pornographers' Carl Newman, boasts the line "Don't ask me for more fried okra / 'Cause if you do, I might try to choke ya," which alone would make Free to Do What? a worthy purchase. As it is, fans of alt-country will find charms aplenty in both the dust-raising numbers, including a cover of Dolly Parton's "Wildflowers," and countrified laments like "Oh Darkness." All come freshly seasoned with fiddle, accordion, and pedal steel guitar and topped with Wolfe's sassy vocals. --Shawn Conner |
