I Told You So
Nathan R. Moberg | Natick, MA USA | 02/18/2009
(4 out of 5 stars)

"I came across The Saturdays on my most recent trip to England in October of 2008 when "UP" was playing on the radio and on Channel 4. I was hooked immediately and the video was even more entertaining. I was lucky enough to return with a bootleg Radio Version since I knew it would be awhile til this would be released state-side. Upon my return, I listened to it 3-4 times a day, sometimes more!

With the help of YOuTube and Wikipedia I have followed their recent successes and listened to most of the album via Youtube. I knew going in that "IF THIS IS LOVE" "UP" "ISSUES" and "WHY ME, WHY NOW" were the stand out tracks!!

My copy of this album just arrived from my friend in England (who pays a fiver compared to $25+ here) and I'm liking what I am hearing from the rest of the album. WORK, VULNERABLE, LIES, and KEEP HER stick out from what I hear. I think the stand out voices of this five piece are Una (first verse of up) and Vanessa (2nd verse of Up and most of the lead for the album) They are sensational, and these girls sing live, unlike our PCD.

Mark my words, I am one of 2 reviewers for the CD right now...if The Saturdays lauch state-side, I will soon have lots of company! Let's continue the new Brit-pop invasion of the USA!!"

"i KNEW FROM WHEN I HEARD THE CLIPS OF CD ON ITUNES THAT THIS CD WAS GONNA BE AMAZING. ALTHOUGH VANESSA SINGS MAJORITY OF CD....THE HARMONIES OF THESE 5 GIRLS ARE SOOOO GOOD. ISSUES IS MY FAVORITE SONG SO SWEET, YET SO VICIOUS, KEEP HER IS MEAN AND IM SURE LOTS OF GIRLS CAN RELATE TO IT....BUT IN GENERAL CAN RELATE TO THE WHOLE CD. WATCH OUT GIRLS ALOUD THE SATURDAYS ARE RIGHT BEHIND YOU. CANT WAIT TO SEE WHAT THEY DO WIT A SECOND CD."
Another amazing girlband rises to the top

"Up until last year, the UK only had two amazing girlbands - Girls Aloud and Sugababes holding up the fort. We needed another. Cue The Saturdays.

Many compare The Saturdays to Girls Aloud, due to the fact they supported them on their Tangled Up tour and their music is vaguely similar. I use the word 'vaguely' here cos the only similarities are that they both do great material. That's it.

I absolutely LOVE this album, it's one of the strongest debut discs I've heard in some time. There isn't one track I dislike.

Rundown:

01. If This Is Love

The Saturday's debut single, this was the first track I heard from them, and at the time, I wasn't impressed. It seemed overproduced and dull to me. But after hearing the rest of their material, I went back and gave the song another try and finally started to appreciate it. I love the dark feel of this track, and the chorus is really catchy.

02. Up

The second single, and my favourite Saturdays song, easily. This song is sooooooo amazing! It's incredibly catchy, it's upbeat, it's fun and it's dancey. The girls' vocals sound superb here, and the lyrics are awesome. Love love love this song, and if you're new to the group, this would be a great track to start with.

03. Keep Her

My initial favourite from the album, this track is absolutely fierce! The lyrics are scathing and strong ("shut up and read my lips, cos boy you make me sick"), all about a cheating boyfriend, telling the guy they can keep the other woman. I love this song, but it gets tiring if you play it too much. Still amazing though.

04. Issues

The third single, and another song that had to grow on me. This is the first slower song the girls have attempted, and after a couple of plays, I started to love it. The lyrics are really meaningful and I can relate to them. One of the lyrics in the chorus was changed for the single release (from "I don't know whether I should slap you or kiss you" to "I don't know whether I should leave you or kiss you"). This song has amazing guitar in it.

05. Lies

My second favourite track on the album! I wish this song was a single, cos it's amazing. It's incredibly strong vocal wise, the girls sound fantastic. It's also very catchy, with cool echoed bits on the chorus. Amazing lyrics too. Definitely a highlight of the album for me.

06. Work

I don't get why so many people love this song so much. I like it, but it's not one of my favourites. It sounds too similar to their other stuff and gets repetitive. But it's catchy and the chorus is cool.

07. Chasing Lights

The title track of the album, and it's a slower midtempo track. This song is very sweet and the lyrics are very meaningful. I really like track cos the girls sound sincere on it. A great title track for the album.

08. Set Me Off

This song is similar to Work in the way that I don't like it as much as the rest of the album. It's kind of generic, but I like the 'set me off, set me off' bit. Not one of their best, but still a good song.

09. Fall

The big ballad of the album, this song is just gorgeous. The girls sound phenomonal, and the lyrics are amazing. This song should have been a single, as it shows how talented the girls are. Amazing track.

10. Vulnerable

This song is disliked by many of the girls' fans, but I can't figure out why, cos this one is one of my favourites! Another midtempo track, it's really catchy and has cool music. This song needs more love, definitely.

11. Why Me, Why Now

This is a weird one, cos they mix guitar with a dancey backbeat, to make some kind of dance/guitar pop hybrid. But it's pretty good, the chorus is quite catchy.

12. Up (Wideboys Remix Edit)

The UK bonus track, it's a remix of Up. It's alright, it's actually shorter then the original track. It's fast paced and keeps your attention.

If you get the re-issue of the album, there's one extra track:

13. Just Can't Get Enough

This was the girls' fourth single, and it was for the charity Comic Relief. It's a cover of Depeche Mode, and reached #2 in the charts, their highest chart position to date. And it's great! It's sooooooooo catchy, probably their catchiest track to date. The girls sound like they're having fun too.

Overall, this is a very strong album, with lots of higlights.

My top five songs = Up, Lies, Just Can't Get Enough, Vulnerable & Keep Her

If you like Girls Aloud or Sugababes, definitely check out The Saturdays, they're another top group, with a great first album."
