Synopsis
Product Description Born out of Portland, Oregon's burgeoning indie pop scene, The Retrofits marry the instrumentation of a jazz ensemble with the catchy melodies and arrangements of a mainstream rock band. Grounded in jazz piano, acoustic guitar, soulful harmonies, and vivid lyrics, The Retrofits opened for national acts Everclear and Pink Martini within their first year of performing. The Retrofits debut album Away From Here (2007) features 12 original tracks recorded at Portland, Oregon's legendary Kung Fu Bakery Studios. The album was engineered by Dave Friedlander (Prince, George Clinton, Pink Martini), mixed by Friedlander and Nick Moon (Gino Vannelli), and mastered by Bernie Grundman (Michael Jackson, Alanis Morissette, Jamie Cullum) in Hollywood, California. Special guests on the album include Stephanie Schneiderman (backing vocals) & Brian Davis (congas) from Pink Martini. |
CD ReviewsOutstanding Sophomore Effort M. Thompson | Washington State | 02/06/2008 (5 out of 5 stars) "An extremely creative CD--very eclectic--not a bad cut among the 12. I have listened countless times and still enjoy everything about it; particularly "Anything You Like", "Love Letter", "When There's Nothing" and "One True Thing". Highly recommended." Strong First Album G. Barr | Massachusetts, USA | 10/23/2007 (4 out of 5 stars) "I have really enjoyed this album and it's clear that we can expect more great original music from The Retrofit. Live music is always best (in my opinion) but the listener gets a good sense of the energy these guys bring to the stage on this CD. Easy to listen to again and again, I recommend this album highly." Beyond College Rock Rob | Park City, UT | 03/06/2007 (3 out of 5 stars) "A collection of very nicely rendered, authentic and original songs. The group has achieved a consistent sound that pleases, featuring a very professional blend of instrumentation. No hard edges, but the intelligent lyrics and melodies, with subtle complexities, hold your interest just as you are about to wonder if these guys can get any nicer."
