The Last good Pogues album
Mark Twain | USA | 08/11/2009
(4 out of 5 stars)
"When the Pogues released "Peace and Love" they were at the peak of their popularity, but alcohol and drug abuse were beginning to pull the band apart. The evidence of Shane McGowan's descent into an alcoholic dissipation is evidence in his slurred vocals. On many of the songs the lyrics are barely comprehensible. The album nonetheless has a certain edge and energy, and also shows the Pogues willingness to depart a little bit from the comfortable rowdy rendering of Irish pub standards and original songs written in that mold. When this album was first released, I was disappointed in it. But all these years later, I find many of these songs rattling around in my head. Conventional wisdom says that Rum, Sodomy and the Lash is their masterpiece, and the album that preceded it (Red Roses for Me) and followed (If I Should Fall From Grace With God) constitute their three great albums. But I think there is room for a fourth great Pogues album, and this is it.
The MP3 downloadable version also has a slew of extras--B-sides and outtakes, and many of these are surprisingly good. Definitely worth ten bucks."
