CD Reviews

Great beats, clever lyrics, slick and hilarious presentation
Randolph Boon | Vermont, USA | 02/03/2005
(5 out of 5 stars)

"The Notorious MSG's album, "Die Hungry," is one of few that manages to succeed on the levels of both music and comedy. It offers consistently catchy, enjoyable rap performed by a cohesive and funny Chinese trio. The beats and back-up are superb, with each song seeming to allude to a different musical genre: from "Chinese Funk," the obviously soulful modernization of the 70's, to "Straight Out of Canton,"the terrific Chinese version of N.W.A.'s controversial 1990 breakout hit. Likewise, the words and their performance both top-notch. Filled with theme humor, eclectic personalities, and diverse rhyme schemes, every MSG song is fantastic. Interspersed amongst the amazing songs are also three comedy sketches. These, while very funny, amount to the only complaints for the entire album. The sketch "Hong Kong Heartbreak," while pretty funny, is very long and less rewarding then either of the sketches and any of the songs especially. The sketch tracks also nearly fracture the pacing of the album, as they are slow and obviously talky while compared to the fast, hard-hitting songs. They are, however, very funny overall and a delightful contrast to the even funnier and more delightful musical tracks.

"I can't believe that amazon.com has this CD. I purchased mine when I saw them live. These guys are so cool, and their act is so polished. They make fun of their own culture on purpose, which is funny, unlike William Hung who makes fun of himself and Asians without knowing it. These guys are hard, but they aren't 3 Jins, because they are so funny. Anyway, I like these guys and I'm a fan. I heard about these guys through a friend about 2 years ago and I have visited their website. These guys are comic geniuses. Go for their delivery service and get this CD punk sucka b...!!!"
