Many listeners and even singers will be surprised to learn that Beethoven wrote numerous arrangements of English, Irish, Scottish, and Welsh folksongs. Although not all of these were successful--he did them to satisfy a commission--many are excellent and worthy of wider performance. Unfortunately, the disc begins with the weakest selection, but if you hang in there, you'll be treated to some wonderful and often ingenious rarities. --David Vernier
