CD ReviewsThe Indulgers Combine Celtic and Western Life For A Unique B Ginger Curry | Albuquerque, NM United States | 07/27/2006 (5 out of 5 stars) "The long awaited "Out In The West" has finally been released to anxious fans, all curious of how Nile & McCarron could put together their classic Celtic/Irish tunes with something that sounded western. Well, I was amazed to hear that not only did they manage it, they have created a whole new sound for music lovers. The tunes often have a bit of a jig to them, certainly enough to remind you that this is a Celtic Band and making you want to dance. Then you start listening to the lyrics and find a whole different story being told.
As a Floridian who fell in love with the Southwest and made the move west 4 years ago, I have often pondered the hardships and impossible challenges our ancestors braved in order to climb mountains and crawl through canyons with the barest of essentials. What made them press on? Listen to this CD and you begin to get an idea. Both Damien and Mike wrote their share of lyrics and both seem to have a handle on exactly how it felt to trudge on by wagon day after day or work in the brutal sun building rails so that the nextwave of settlers would have it a little easier. My two favorite songs are "High Noon " and "Journey West". "High Noon" is about a homesick young man who travels from his home country to find his fortune, only to become a gunfighter in order to live. My interpretation of "The Journey West" is a extremely melodic, dreamy song of hope for what might be. Another terrific song, but I think better performed live, is Cheyenne. I don't think I'll ever tire of hearing these three. Mike Nile sings the title song and gives it the perfect touch of old west huskiness. I must admit that when I first heard of the concept of this CD, I was throughly confused and although I love all types of music and The Indulgers are at the top of my list of favorites, I almost dreaded hearing it. What if I didn't like it? Or worse, what if I hated it? At first hearing, however, I was blown away by not just how good it is, but how unique the sound and concept are. This CD deserves to be heard far and wide. It could actually be the start of a whole new genre of music. Call your local radio stations, check the website for info on videos, pass the word on. You will never find another one like "Out In The West" " |
