Don't Let It Go
Holy Olio | Grand Rapids, MI USA | 03/20/2001
(3 out of 5 stars)

"Don't Let It GoHave you ever noticed that there are no depressing Mississippi John Hurt songs? He can sing about hanging a criminal and being glad to see him die, and I just can't stop tappin' my toes. I get the same feeling listening to these Fries lyrics --"Will she come back to me real soon? That's why I've written this sad tune."I found this band's listing on IUMA and grabbed the sample track, "She's Gone". This was a while ago, as the sample was in layer 2 format, but this CD is worth getting for that track alone. The song is fun, the lyrics are great, and if this band has management "She's Gone" will wind up on a Farrelly Brothers soundtrack, the sooner the better. I wound up ordering it direct from the band and haven't regretted it.The opening track really moves out, and could easily be a crossover to country radio. Perhaps closer to the Fries' hometown it gets airplay. It should. "The Crossing" is probably the track that reminds the pro reviewer of CSNY. "The Willow" reminded me a little of Jerry Garcia's work in and out of the Dead. "Let it Go" is another fun track. The a cappella cover of "Mercedes Benz" is very well performed, and so for that matter are all the tracks. Some of the other material on here reflects their venues in Ohio. I mean, why anyone wanted to hear "Bojangles" in the first place is a mystery to me. Regardless, IMO the Fries' only problem, and it's very minor, is to tinker a bit too much in the studio. Obviously they know how to write, they need a more live sound on record and less synthesis. My guess is they are dynamite live.Click "add to cart" right now or I'll tell everyone how you used to like Milli Vanilli. 1. Taste of Freedom * 2. Part of Me is You 3. She's Gone * 4. Mercedes Benz-a cappella * 5. River's Edge - instrumental 6. The Crossing 7. Ghosts I Can't Forget 8. The Willow 9. Mr. Bojangles10. All the Way *11. Legacy of Love12. Runnin' Away in My Mind13. Let it Go *14. Timeless Flight (epilogue)* probable tracks to air, give or take station format"
