Synopsis

Product Description
The back cover photo of Scratch The Surface, the debut CD by New York alt rockers The Cringe depicts a band of figurine astronauts watching the fiery launch of a rocket ship. The image is an apt metaphor for The Cringe, a group of urban high-flyers who are watching their own rocket-powered musical vehicle blast off into the stratosphere. The fuel? A high-octane blend of politicized power pop and big-belt-buckle blare, driving an accelerated schedule of fast and furious
club and festival dates, and success at radio formats across the board.

Driven by the gutsy, authoritative lead vocals and potent songwriting of band founder, John Cusimano, The Cringe whose
well traveled members include lead guitarist James Roto Rotondi (ex-Air, Mr. Bungle), bassist Jonny Matias (ex-Crash
Moderns) and drum colossus Shawn Pelton (Saturday Night Live Band, Bruce Springsteen) certainly don t need fluffy hype
when the critics, and the band s own brazen lyrics and musicianship, say it best: Cusimano s infectious and insightful
songwriting is the foundation for the band s dynamic mix of artful harmonic power pop and raw, aggressive punk
garage-band energy, enthused the All Music guide s review of the band s 2007 sophomore release, Tipping Point.

That artful, aggressive dynamic has been pushed into overdrive on The Cringe s soon-to-be-released third full-length
album, Play Thing, which kicks The Cringe up several gears in creativity, cojones and killer instinct. Showcasing some of the band s heaviest, headiest moments to date the prog-infused Poison , the thrash-meets-art rock excursion Where It
Hurts ; and the Zeppy epic Start Again as well as some of its most melodic and mature songcraft, the album is the result of a highly collaborative, even painstaking lyric and music writing process and a more rigorous recording ethic, a creative
collision of defiant analog purists and adventurous digital renegades, both committed to creating the strongest possible
album.

You wouldn t know it from the title, laughs Cusimano, who considers the album the full-strength distillation of the band s sound and soul, but, as fun as it could be, making Play Thing was definitely not always a playful process. We didn t let anything go until we were all 100% behind it and that required a lot of extra sweat and tears. But we truly believe that the end result makes it all completely worth the effort.
