"Practically unknown for Western listeners, Avet Terterian (Armenia, 1929-1994) is no doubt one of the best composers in the last fifty years, and one of the few great composers the Soviet era produced in the second half of the century, together with Ustvolskaya, Gubaidulina, Schnittke and Kancheli. This CD is really extraordinary. Both symphonies (3 and 4) are innovative, risky and strongly expressive. The idea of symphony is in itself a different one (like in the other mentioned composers). Loris Tjeknavorian does a good job, just the contrary of what his Stalinian and dangerously light panorama in *Orchestral Music of Armenia* (issued also by ASV) could announce. The Armenian Philharmonic Orchestra sounds incredibly well."
